 Behind the Scenes

Holy+Land+Landscape+Edited.jpg

The Holy Land

Over two thousand years ago, the very first Christian Community was established and Salvation was achieved in this land. Home of the places where Jesus was born, died and resurrected, the Holy Land is the most important site for Christians. This Land, in the custody of the Franciscans encompasses modern-day Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Western Jordan, Lebanon and South-Western Syria. For pilgrims, the journey begins in the Galilee Region of Northern Israel where the early stages of Jesus’ Ministry began, at the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The major sites of the Galilee Region include, Magdala, Nazareth, Cana, the Mount of Beatitudes, Capernaum, Tabgha, Mount Carmel and Mount Tabor. The path then travels south to Jerusalem, The Holy City. It is in the Holy City where Jesus was presented as an infant and went into the Temple as a child to then return as an adult and institute the Eucharist before enduring His Passion and Death. He would rise again from the dead and ultimately end His Ministry when He ascended into Heaven from the Mount of Olives. The major sites of Jerusalem include, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Temple Mount, St. Peter in Gallicantu, the Church of All Nations, the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock.

  • FR. JEAN-PIERRE "JP" SEON, KCHS

    EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

Fr. JP Seon from an early age had discerned the priesthood. Growing up in Astoria Queens, he was always very active with his faith. He would serve as an altar server at his parish, Immaculate Conception then would go on to become director of campus ministry of Holy Cross High School after graduating from there. He would then attend Manhattan College and graduate with a degree in mathematics/education, then become a teacher at Holy Cross. It was during that time God’s call to the priesthood became more and more compelling to him. Soon enough Fr. JP would make the difficult but life-changing decision to pursue the priesthood and give up tenure at Holy Cross.

In May of 2016, Fr. JP would be ordained a priest. He first served as Parochial Vicar at St. Barnabas in the Bronx and Yonkers. He then was transferred to St. Augustine’s in Ossining as Parochial Vicar in 2018. It was at that point Fr. JP would become involved with Credo Young Adults with then chaplain, Fr. John Wilson.

It was one night in November of 2018 at a social after Mass that the young adults of Credo would approach Fr. JP with the idea of going to the Holy Land. Fr. JP would jump at the chance and 14 months later, the pilgrimage would come to fruition.

A fellow Knight of the Holy Sepulcher, Fr. JP would celebrate the biggest Mass he has ever done in the Tomb of Christ in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

With the success of the pilgrimage, Fr. JP now does lots of pilgrimage planning and is highly active in young adult ministry.

Director’s Statement

As a kid I was always curious about the story of Jesus and how the Bible Story unfolded. I never thought for a second I’d actually walk in the exact spots Jesus walked and relive those events through Mass and prayer and retell the story from my perspective. There were many times I fell away from the faith and every time I came back and decided to get serious about it, things would turn around for the better. Everything came full circle once I stepped into this land. The Holy Land taught me what it truly means to be Catholic but also how to keep your heart and mind open to endless possibilities and see the good in every situation.

This project reminded me of the many reasons why I love filmmaking, to capture big moments and to tell many inspiring stories while also opening my eyes to many different cultures. I’ve captured many different events throughout my career from President Obama’s motorcade driving through Havana and the Rolling Stones playing their first concert in Cuba to the tune of half a million people, to a red carpet event commemorating the 20th anniversary of David Wells’ Perfect Game to ultimately celebrating the biggest Mass of our lives in the Tomb of Christ.

The goal of this film is not only to see the experience of mine and my fellow pilgrims, but to show what faith can do for someone and how the story of Jesus can impact anyone regardless of their faith and walk of life. The world needs to know about these stories and to know that there is always hope, to never give up on anything. God can turn around any situation. Every Christian needs to come to the Holy Land to relive Salvation History and cultivate their faith.

Sites of the Holy Land

  • Boat Chapel

    Magdala

Believed to be the home of Mary Magdalene, just a few miles north of the Sea of Galilee, it was a big fishing town during the first century. Home of the Duc in Altum Center (Latin for put out into the deep) named after the words Jesus said to Peter during their first encounter, telling him to go lower his nets in the water for a catch. The Center has six chapels including a boat chapel and a lower lever encounter chapel which has a mural of Jairus’s daughter touching Jesus’ cloth. It is from prayers said in that Chapel where three miracles have happened. The pilgrims went to the Chapel after Mass and prayed with a young couple who had a very sick child.

  • Cana

The site of the First Miracle of Jesus where He turned water into wine at the Wedding Feast. Many couples come to Cana to renew their vows. Three couples on this trip, Michael and Maribel Saccomanno, Nicole and Nicholas Kristensen and Paul and Annemarie Pattella had the opportunity to renew their vows on January 20th, 2020.

  • Nazareth

The home of Mary and very place where the Incarnation occurred. The Basilica of the Annunciation is built over the house of Mary and the exact spot where Mary would proclaim her Fiat in the Annunciation. Gabriel the Archangel appears to her and announces to her that she will bear the Son of God and that her cousin Elizabeth would be the mother of John the Baptist. Nazareth would be the hometown of Jesus. The pilgrims with Fr. JP standing by the altar in front of the grotto got to witness the Angelus prayed by the Franciscans at 12 Noon.

  • Sea of Galilee

The body of water where the disciples fished and then would be proclaimed as fishers of men by Jesus. This is also the water that Jesus walked on to His disciples, defying fear and lack of faith. The pilgrims took a boat ride in the morning of January 21st, 2020 where they had the opportunity to cast nets into to the water.

  • Mount of Beatitudes

Overlooking the Sea of Galilee, this mountain is where Jesus would give His famous Sermon on the Mount to multitudes of people, introducing the Kingdom of Heaven. The Beatitudes are fundamental teachings of Christianity in living and spreading the Word of God. The Beatitudes also fufil the promises of God that started with Abraham. The pilgrims made their way there after the boat ride and it was in the church where a group of Greek Orthodox monks led an 8-minute chant.

  • Caesarea Philippi

Once a Greco-Roman city, now Israeli controlled Syria in the region of Golan Heights. The start of the Jordan River and the southwestern base of Mount Hermon. Ruins of pagan temples are situated there. It is the rock where Jesus declared to Simon Peter that he will build His church. At this site, there is a well where visitors can pump the Holy Water from the Jordan River into bottles which the pilgrims had the opportunity to do.

  • Mount Tabor

It is at this mountain where Jesus would reveal his divinity to Peter, James and John. The Lord transfigured as His clothes shined white and the prophets Elijah and Moses would appear and converse with Him. God the Father would then speak from the sky telling the disciples to listen to His Son. The ultimate change was made here as this event would be the precursor to the Lord’s arrival into Jerusalem and His Passion. Mass was celebrated here on Greg Di Roma’s birthday, January 21st, 2020.

  • Capernaum

This village located off the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee is also known as the Town of Jesus. The Bread of Life discourse was proclaimed by Jesus in the Synagogue in Capernaum. The remains of the 4th-century Synagogue still exist in this village. An octagonal 5th-century church is also built over Peter’s Mother-in-Law’s house, where she was healed by Jesus. It is also the same spot where Jesus healed the crippled man.

  • Tabgha

The Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes took place at this location. The Church of the Multiplication has a mosaic of the loaves and fish. There are four loaves in the mosaic with the fifth being the Eucharist. Jesus also made his fourth appearance after the Resurrection in Tabgha.

  • Judean Wilderness

Also known as The Valley of the Shadow of Death. This desert, east of Jerusalem and located in the Israeli controlled part of West Bank descends to the Dead Sea. This is the desert Jesus went to for 40 days and 40 nights after he was tempted by the devil. A monastery known as St. George’s Monastery is off a cliff in the middle of the valley.

  • Jerusalem

The Holy City and the most prominent site for Christians. Also known as the City of David, many important events in Salvation History happened in this city, from Mary presenting Jesus, to the Christ Child getting lost in the temple, to then entering the city as an adult and fulfilling His Passion, Death and Resurrection and ultimately ending His earthly mission on the Mount of Olives, ascending into Heaven. Jesus also foresaw the destruction of Jerusalem and wept. Jerusalem has indeed been destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times and captured and recaptured 44 times. The Old City of Jerusalem is divided into four quarters, the Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Armenian Quarters.

  • Calvary

Calvary, located in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, is the exact rock also known as Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified and died. Two Chapels are in Calvary, one Catholic and one Greek Orthodox. The original rock of Calvary can be seen on both sides of the altar in protected glass. The Church of Holy Sepulcher encompasses the entire end of the Passion. Beside the hill of Calvary is an anointing stone where it is believed to be the spot where Jesus’ body was wrapped and prepared for burial. Underneath Calvary is the Tomb of Adam where tradition holds that the skull of Adam was buried under the site of the Crucifixion. It is also believed by some that the Blood of Christ dripped from the Cross and into the rock to fill Adam’s skull. In the morning of January 23rd, 2020 the pilgrims climbed up the steep stairs of Calvary and venerated the Cross.

  • The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, The Tomb of Jesus

The most important spot of Christianity where life was restored once and for all, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The original cave where Jesus’ body laid is enclosed in the Aedicule under a massive dome inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Mass was celebrated here on January 23rd, 2020 at 5:30 AM by Fr. JP and Deacons Cliff Calanni and Eymard Smith for half an hour in the empty Tomb. The pilgrims were given a gift that let them celebrate the biggest Mass of their lives, and were reminded why they are people of Easter.

The Aedicule was renovated from May 2016 to March 2017 as the structure had been deteriorating. It was an excavation during that time that revealed a slab with a Crusader cross and the original limestone of the cave still intact.

  • Church of Pater Noster

Located on the Mount of Olives, this church built by the Crusaders commemorates the prayer Christ taught us, the Our Father. Throughout the church and cloister, the Our Father is translated in over 140 languages inscribed on ceramic plaques. A cave that forms the grotto underneath the church is believed to be the cave where Jesus taught the Lord’s prayer. After having Mass in the Tomb, the pilgrims gathered in the Church and prayed a decade of the Rosary.

  • St. Peter in Gallicantu

St. Peter in Gallicantu, translated St. Peter in Tears is the location of the garden where Peter denied Jesus three times. It is where Jesus would be arrested and brought into custody in the High Priest Caiphas’ house. In the afternoon after Mass in the Tomb, the pilgrims were brought into one of the gardens with their tour guide, Fabricio Lomanto and were invited to practice a deep meditation reenacting the story of Jesus watching the Roman soldiers in the distance, waiting to be arrested. It is there where they learn and feel the anguish Jesus felt as He was awaiting His Passion to unfold. A set of stairs adjacent to the church are the same stairs Jesus walked down when He was on His way to Gethsemane and where He would be arrested by hundreds of Roman Soldiers to be sent to Pilate.

  • Mount of Olives

Across the Kidron Valley from the Old City of Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives is another location where multiple events happened. It is associated with Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Jesus took the Palm Sunday Road from Bethany and descended the Mount Olives and into Jerusalem. Jesus would also come back up the Mount, prophesize the Fall of Jerusalem and weep. Jesus then would end His earthly mission there and ascend into Heaven. This mountain covered by an enormous Jewish cemetery and the Tomb of the Prophets. This Mount is where the Resurrection of the Dead and the Final Judgement are to take place.

  • Church of All Nations

Also known as the Church of the Agony, at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Gethsemane, this site entails the Garden of Gethsemane where the Passion of Christ began. Inside the church is the actual rock Jesus kneeled on and sweat blood when He was praying to His Father before He was arrested. The church was funded by many countries including the United States, Great Britain, France, Ireland and Italy. The flags of these countries hang in the church.

  • Bethlehem, The Nativity of the Lord

The manger where Jesus was born is underneath the main altar of the Church of the Nativity, located in the West Bank of Palestine. This church is the oldest church in the Holy Land. A star with 14 points marks the exact spot where the Baby Jesus laid when He was born. The 14 points represent the 14 generations of the genealogy of Christ. This site was discovered by Empress Helena and the first basilica was built by her son, Emperor Constantine I.

  • Ein Karem, Church of St. John the Baptist

Ein Karem is a village southwest of Jerusalem where the Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth took place when they were both pregnant. In this church is a cave where Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist. This church is run by the Franciscans. Many images depicting the Life of St. John the Baptist are in this church. Outside of the church are murals of the Canticle of Zechariah written in many different languages.

  • The Cenacle

Located on Mt Zion, also known as The Upper Room, two major events happened in this room, The Last Supper and The Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles at Pentecost. The very first Mass was said by Jesus at His Last Supper when he instituted the Eucharist. The first Christian Church was established by the Disciples when the Holy Spirit came upon them. After having Mass at the Church of the Last Supper, the pilgrims led by Fr. JP recited the Creed to commemorate the Beginning of the Church.

  • The Church of the Dormition

Also known as the Church of the Assumption is located on Mt Zion, the highest point of Ancient Jerusalem. This is the place where Mary fell asleep and was assumed into Heaven. The church has two levels, the upper level being the church itself with a monastic choir and the lower level being a crypt with a life-sized statue of Mary asleep. The pilgrims prayed a decade of the Rosary and recited the Marian Antiphon, Salve Regina.

  • The Shroud of Turin Exhibit in Jerusalem

This exhibit is run by the Notre Dame Hotel in Jerusalem. The exhibit shows the photographic research done on the shroud along with replicas of the items used in the Crucifixion. A replica of the shroud along with a 3D sculpture of Jesus in the shroud are also on permanent display.

  • The Dead Sea

The lowest point on Earth. Because of the minerals in this body of water, no fish can live in it, hence the name of the sea. However, the book of Ezekiel prophesizes that the Dead Sea will transform into water that can inhabit sea life. Half of the Dead Sea is split between Israeli and Jordanian territories. Skin care products worldwide contain minerals from the Dead Sea.

  • Western Wall

Also known as the Wailing Wall, is the last remnant of the Second Jewish Temple which King Herod had begun building. This is the holiest site for Judaism. Visitors write petitions and place them in the creases of the wall. A tunnel at the left end of the wall is a tunnel that leads into 500 meters of the extended wall underneath the buildings of the Old City.
